Honing In

11/6/23

Today, I conducted my very first research interview. Dr. Matt Engels at Baylor Scott and White Frisco was very friendly and helpful. We sat down and began discussing his career. Dr. Engels gave me very helpful insight into the lifestyle that accompanies being an anesthesiologist, including how his work schedule interferes with his life as well as what factors he wishes he could change about his career and job description. We also discussed where I should center my research, and he encouraged me to look away from anesthesia awareness and try to focus on more pertinent points of anesthesiology. For example, he encouraged me to do some research on the advancements in technology regarding anesthesia administration, as surgeons in the DFW area are currently experimenting with robotic administration of anesthesia without the presence of an anesthesiologist. I continued to discuss this in detail in my interview assessment and why I decided to research Post Operative Cognitive Dysfunction instead of robotic advancements. I hope that in my next research interview, I can determine what specific parts of medications and techniques are the most detrimental to causing POCD as well as find useful ways to prevent it. Next week, I will gather my research into more definitive products to create my Original Work
